Adjectival polarity and the processing of scalar inferences

چکیده
In a seminal study, Bott & Noveck (2004) found that the computation of scalar inference ‘some’ implying ‘not all’ was associated with increased sentence verification times, suggesting processing cost. Recently, van Tiel and colleagues (2019b) hypothesised presence this cost critically depends on polarity word. We comprehensively evaluated hypothesis basis sentence-picture task in which we tested 16 types adjectival inferences. develop quantitative measure combines insights from linguistics psychology. line hypothesis, our reliably predicted or absence (i.e., an increase times). conclude alleged for inferencing tasks is not due to process drawing inference, but rather cognitive difficulty verifying negative information.

Processing Scalar Inferences in Face-Threatening Contexts
Depending on politeness considerations, the quantifier ‘some’ can receive a broad interpretation (some and possibly all) or a narrow interpretation (some but not all). Face-threatening statements such as ‘some people hated your speech’ encourage the broad interpretation that everyone hated the speech. Because previous research showed that broad interpretations are normally faster and easier, po...
متن کاملThe Realization of Scalar Inferences: Context Sensitivity without Processing Cost
Scalar inference is the phenomenon whereby the use of a less informative term (e.g., some of) is inferred to mean the negation of a more informative term (e.g., to mean not all of). Default processing accounts assume that the interpretation of some of as meaning not all of is realized easily and automatically (regardless of context), whereas context-driven processing accounts assume that it is ...
متن کاملSemantic Polarity of Adjectival Predicates in Online Reviews
Web users produce more and more documents expressing opinions. Because these have become important resources for customers and manufacturers, many have focused on them. Opinions are often expressed through adjectives with positive or negative semantic values. In extracting information from users’ opinion in online reviews, exact recognition of the semantic polarity of adjectives is one of the m...
متن کاملDifferences and similarities between scalar inferences and scalar modifiers
Speakers that utter a sentence like in (1) are usually understood to communicated that they didn’t mean that all of Ann’s friends shared her grim view of the world. In order to explain this scalar implicature, the scalar expression a handful is assumed to evoke a set of alternatives whose members are ordered in terms of informativeness along the lines of (2). A listener reasons that the speaker...
